Urgent Health Advisory: Deadly Bacterial Illnesses Spread Across the US, Officials Issue Warning

United States: The US health experts have issued a warning over the rise of uncommon bacterial infections that can cause meningitis. The illness is highly unusual and fatal, characterized by an infection and swelling of the brain’s external barrier or adjacent tissues.

The public was notified on March 28 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of an increase in serogroup Y invasive meningococcal illness.

The United States saw 422 recorded cases in 2023—the most in a single year since 2014. According to the CDC’s warning, 143 cases have been documented so far this year, showing a trend toward exceeding the number of cases reported in 2023, as outlined by news daily Voice of America.

At least 17 people died in incidents last year, though the majority did not include meningitis. According to the CDC, cases were more prevalent among Black adults and those living with HIV in adults between the ages of 30 and 60. It is noteworthy that HIV is a virus that may cause AIDS, a dangerous illness that can compromise the body’s defense mechanisms.

Symptoms might include

Meningococcal disease infection can result in symptoms such as fever, headache, upper body discomfort, nausea, and vomiting, according to the health experts.

An infection of the blood system can also be brought on by the bacterium, which may result in symptoms like cold, exhaustion, cold hands and feet, rapid breathing, diarrhea, or skin discoloration – which are also counted as the symptoms of that infection.

Antibiotics and other prescription drugs can be used to treat the illness. However, prompt therapy is necessary for success. Ten to fifteen percent of those affected pass away. Additionally, survivors may experience hearing loss or require surgical excision of bodily parts, as per Voice of America.

Is there any treatment against meningococcal illness?

The medic experts have highlighted that the vaccines against meningococcal illness are also available. Officials recommended that all children, around the age of 11, must receive a “meningococcal conjugate vaccine.” The CDC also advised being vaccinated again at age 16, as the benefits of vaccination diminish with age.

The CDC further advised getting the vaccinations, for those who are more vulnerable. Additionally, people who reside in areas where outbreaks are occurring, those infected with HIV, and those with certain medical issues may be considered higher-risk persons and are advised to take vaccine.
